Payment Gateways in South Africa: Yoco, PayFast, and Peach Payments Compared

Payment Gateways in South Africa: Yoco, PayFast, and Peach Payments Compared

If you’re setting up an online store in South Africa, choosing a payment gateway is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Get it wrong and customers abandon checkout. Get it right and you’ve removed one of the biggest barriers between a browsing visitor and a completed sale.

South Africa has a handful of reputable local payment gateways, each with different strengths, fee structures, and target business types. The three you’ll hear about most often are Yoco, PayFast, and Peach Payments. Here’s how they actually compare.

What Is a Payment Gateway and Why Does It Matter?

PayFast is the most established South African payment gateway and the default choice for WooCommerce stores, offering card payments, Instant EFT, SnapScan, and broad consumer recognition. Yoco suits small businesses that also need in-person card payments, since it handles both physical and online transactions under one provider. Peach Payments is aimed at higher-volume businesses needing subscription billing, multi-currency processing, or negotiated enterprise rates. All three are PCI DSS compliant and integrate with both WooCommerce and Shopify.

A payment gateway is the technology that securely processes payments on your website. When a customer enters their card details or chooses an EFT at your checkout, the gateway encrypts that information, communicates with the customer’s bank, authorises (or declines) the transaction, and returns the result to your store.

Your gateway choice affects:

  • Which payment methods your customers can use (card, EFT, QR code, instant EFT, etc.)
  • How much you pay per transaction (fees vary meaningfully between providers)
  • How quickly funds reach your bank account (payout schedules differ)
  • How easily it integrates with your platform (WooCommerce, Shopify, etc.)
  • How much your customers trust the checkout (recognisable, local brands matter)

Yoco: The Small Business Favourite

Yoco launched in South Africa in 2015 primarily as a card machine provider for small businesses - the portable card reader that lets you accept in-person payments at markets, pop-ups, and shops. Over time they expanded to include online payments, making them one of the more versatile providers for businesses that need both physical and digital payment capabilities.

Strengths:

  • Strong brand recognition, particularly with small and medium businesses
  • Both in-person card machines and online checkout under one provider
  • Simple, transparent setup
  • Good WooCommerce and Shopify integrations
  • ZAR-native, local company

Fee structure: Yoco publishes their fees on their website. At the time of writing, their online transaction fees are in the region of 2.6% to 2.95% per transaction for card payments (check their current pricing as this changes). There’s typically no monthly fee for basic access to the online gateway.

Payout timing: Yoco pays out to your bank account within 1 to 3 business days for most account types.

Best suited for: Small to medium businesses, particularly those who already use Yoco in-person and want a unified payment solution, or businesses just starting out with online sales.

PayFast: The Established SA Gateway

PayFast has been processing South African online payments since 2007, making it the most established local gateway. It’s deeply integrated into the South African e-commerce ecosystem - most WooCommerce builds in SA use PayFast, and its name is recognised by South African online shoppers.

Strengths:

  • Longest track record in SA e-commerce
  • Widest range of payment methods: Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Instant EFT (via Peach or Ozow), SCode, MasterPass, and SnapScan
  • Instant EFT is a significant differentiator - many SA customers prefer EFT and won’t complete a card purchase
  • Native, mature WooCommerce plugin
  • Shopify integration available
  • Well-recognised and trusted by SA consumers

Fee structure: PayFast charges a percentage per transaction plus a small fixed fee per transaction. The exact rates depend on your account type and monthly turnover - they have published rate schedules on their website. Businesses processing larger volumes can negotiate rates. There’s a monthly fee for certain account types; others are pay-as-you-go.

Payout timing: PayFast processes payouts on weekdays, and funds typically reach your account within 1 to 2 business days.

Best suited for: South African e-commerce stores of any size. If you want the broadest payment method coverage including Instant EFT, PayFast is the default choice for good reason. It’s what we integrate for most WooCommerce projects at JWD.

Peach Payments: Enterprise-Grade Processing

Peach Payments operates at a different level to Yoco and PayFast. It’s primarily aimed at medium to large businesses, enterprises, and platforms processing higher transaction volumes. That said, they do work with growing businesses that need more sophisticated capabilities.

Strengths:

  • Multi-currency processing - accept payments in multiple currencies, suitable for businesses with international customers
  • Tokenisation - securely stores card details for recurring billing and one-click purchases
  • Recurring payments and subscription billing built in
  • Strong API for custom integrations
  • Used by some of South Africa’s larger e-commerce operations
  • Multiple acquiring banks, which can mean better uptime resilience

Fee structure: Peach Payments is less transparent with public pricing than Yoco or PayFast - rates are typically negotiated based on your business’s volume and requirements. Expect their pricing to be more competitive at higher transaction volumes, but potentially less cost-effective for low-volume stores.

Payout timing: Varies by contract - typically within a few business days.

Best suited for: Businesses with higher transaction volumes, those needing subscription billing or tokenised card storage, multi-currency requirements, or complex integration needs. Also suitable for platforms and marketplaces.

How Do the Fees Compare?

Exact fee comparisons are difficult because PayFast and Peach both have tiered or negotiated pricing, and all three providers update their rates periodically. Rather than quote specific numbers that may be outdated, here’s the framework for comparing:

What to compare:

  • Percentage fee per transaction (the main cost)
  • Fixed fee per transaction (small but adds up on low-value transactions)
  • Monthly subscription or account fee (if applicable)
  • Payout timing (affects your cash flow)
  • Chargeback handling fees
  • Settlement currency

General positioning:

  • Yoco tends to be competitive for small volume stores with simple needs
  • PayFast offers competitive rates with more payment method variety
  • Peach becomes more attractive as volume increases and per-transaction rates drop through negotiation

Always check each provider’s current published rates and contact them for a quote if you’re processing meaningful volume. The difference between 2.5% and 2.9% per transaction sounds small, but on R100,000 of monthly sales it’s R400 per month.

How Do You Choose the Right Gateway for Your Business?

Choose Yoco if:

  • You also need in-person card payments and want one unified solution
  • You’re a small business starting out online and want simple setup
  • You’re already a Yoco in-person merchant

Choose PayFast if:

  • You want the broadest South African payment method coverage
  • Instant EFT matters for your customers (it often does - many SA customers still prefer EFT)
  • You’re building on WooCommerce and want the most mature, tested integration
  • You want a well-known brand that your SA customers already recognise at checkout

Choose Peach Payments if:

  • You need subscription billing or stored cards for repeat customers
  • You’re processing multi-currency transactions
  • Your volume justifies negotiating enterprise rates
  • You need a sophisticated API for custom checkout experiences

Do These Gateways Work With WooCommerce and Shopify?

All three integrate with both WooCommerce and Shopify, though the depth and maturity of integrations varies:

  • WooCommerce: PayFast has the most established integration, with a native plugin actively maintained. Yoco and Peach both have WooCommerce plugins as well.
  • Shopify: All three work with Shopify as third-party gateways. Note that Shopify charges an additional transaction fee (0.5% to 2%) on top of your gateway’s fees when not using Shopify Payments - which isn’t available in SA.

For our e-commerce website builds, we integrate the gateway that best fits the client’s business type. Most of the time that’s PayFast, but for businesses already using Yoco in-store or needing recurring billing, we adjust accordingly. You can see examples of what a full e-commerce build looks like on our e-commerce services page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use more than one payment gateway on my store?

Yes, and it’s sometimes a smart move. Many South African stores offer both PayFast (for card and Instant EFT) and Yoco side-by-side, or add a COD option for local customers. WooCommerce supports multiple active gateways - customers choose at checkout. More payment options generally means fewer abandoned carts.

Is it safe to process card payments through these gateways?

Yes, all three are PCI DSS compliant (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), which is the international security standard for handling card data. The actual card data is processed by the gateway, not stored on your website, which is the correct approach. This means your WooCommerce or Shopify store doesn’t directly handle raw card numbers - the gateway does, in its secure, audited environment.
